CARTE supports a diverse range of research areas and practices
in the study of contemporary visual and cultural activity and its
intersection with other disciplines.
Research activities
Most of CARTE's current research involves some aspect of cultural
practice. This is either addressed with creative work, as practice-based
research, or through the analysis of cultural activities. In particular
this includes work with new technologies and other contemporary
media practices. While CARTE endorses creative practice, and process-based
work, it also emphasises the critical study of projects as they
are developed. In many cases a critical analysis of projects and
the processes that have lead to them provide a significant contribution
to an under-explored area of the arts.
In a similar way, while CARTE is keen to support interdisciplinary
research it also encourages a rigorous examination of the processes
involved in collaboration and how the outcomes of the research are
presented and perceived. Other research work by CARTE members involves
work with public and private collections, addressing how material
has been collected and how it is represented, and as such often
involves the participation of other institutions.
The key areas of CARTE's current research areas are:
> The visualisation of information
> Arts and sciences
> Studies of interdisciplinary processes and practices
> Digital arts practice
> Display, presentation and curatorial practices.
Detailed information on each of these areas and the projects involved
can be found in the Research Projects Database.
Outputs
The outputs of research at CARTE are varied, according to the form
of work. They include exhibitions, performances, websites and other
creative productions as well as scholarly publications, conferences
and presentations. Detailed information on individual projects can
also be found on the Research Projects Database.
