Creative Practices and Cultural Institutions
>> 1 year full-time or minimum of 2 years part-time
The MA in Visual Culture is a unique multi-disciplinary theory
based course established around the belief that visual literacy,
and the impact of visual forms of thinking and working, now play
a significant role in society. Drawing upon the cultural institutions
and intellectual resources of central London, the MA balances theoretical
accounts of visual culture with the application of these learnt
perspectives to visual representations in various contexts. For
example: museum and gallery curation, the material culture of the
city, contemporary visual arts, new technologies and media.
The Visual Culture MA is hosted by the Centre for Art, Research,
Technology and Education (CARTE) at the University of Westminster.
CARTE acts as a focus for research and practice across the visual
field, for example, the implications of new media and collaborations
which bring together art and science; critical approaches to curation,
inclusive interpretation and display; cultural democracy and socially
engaged art practice. Students on the MA use the major museums and
galleries in London for regular visits as part of their course,
for example, the British Museum, the Museum of London, Tate Modern,
the Victoria and Albert, the Whitechapel, the White Cube, Photographers
Gallery and Victoria Miro. The MA has a special relationship with
many arts organizations in London for the purpose of work placements.
