The Centre for Arts Research, Technology and Education (CARTE)
is an interdisciplinary research centre at the University
of Westminster. CARTE addresses contemporary cultural issues
and in particular looks at areas where arts practice, and similar
forms of creativity, intersect with other disciplines. In particular,
research activity at CARTE explores visual culture from a pan-disciplinary
perspective and addresses how creative collaborations between different
disciplines take place.
Structure
CARTE was established in 2000 through the support of the Quintin
Hogg Trust. CARTE is uniquely placed as a research centre and working
in conjunction with a range of departments and research areas in
the University and developing partnerships with other institutions.
This approach is reflected in both the individual and centre's research
projects and the planned public activities and it is also central
to the business strategy of the centre. CARTE is currently comprised
of seven staff: five research fellows, a senior lecturer and a centre
manager.
Content
The diverse ranges of outputs from CARTE reflect a dynamic approach
to contemporary visual and cultural practices, within which the
relationship between theory and practice is constantly under review.
CARTE is concerned with the production of visual material using
diverse techniques and technologies and with the analysis and interpretation
of visual culture from both professional and public perspectives.
In particular, substantial research at CARTE addresses creative
collaborations between the arts, sciences and technologies. The
Centre also emphasises the role of practice-based research and several
of the research team at CARTE are practising artists and curators;
the outcomes to their work are presented within a cultural sphere
as well as an academic context.
CARTE hosts an MA in Visual Culture .The MA encompasses an exploration
of Visual Culture and the ways in which objects, artefacts and collections
are perceived.
